Company sues Mel Gibson's ex in child support-related dispute

Florida fans of actor Mel Gibson may be aware that he has a child by his former partner, Oksana Grigorieva. She had hired a forensic accounting firm to investigate Gibson and get an increase in her child support payments to more than $22,000 monthly for their daughter.

Celebrities to head back to court in ongoing child support battle

In Florida, reports indicate that American actress and television personality Jodie Sweetin may be prepared to contest ex-husband Morty Coyle's petition for more child support. Sweetin reportedly filed an income and expense declaration to the Superior Court of Los Angeles on Nov. 8 in advance of a Nov. 16 court date. That hearing has since been rescheduled for Dec. 15.

Baseball star Miguel Cabrera sued for child support

A Florida woman who says she had two children by baseball player Miguel Cabrera sued him for not providing sufficient child support. The woman says that although Cabrera has been married since 2002, she had children by him in 2013 and 2015. Cabrera and his wife have three children of their own.

Child support and wage garnishment demographics

Some Florida workers may have their wages garnished for child support. According to a study published Sept. 27 by the ADP Research Institute, about 7 percent of workers have their paychecks garnished. More than two-thirds of people whose wages are garnished are men, and the most common reason for garnishment is unpaid child support. The study used anonymous data from 12 million workers to reach its conclusions.

Getting a DNA test when requesting child support

When an unmarried woman is seeking child support, Florida family law courts often require DNA testing before the man is ordered to make payments. Due to the advances in technology, DNA testing has high accuracy rates, leaving no doubt whether or not a man is related to the child.

Custody and support decisions for Blac Chyna, Rob Kardashian

Florida residents who are "Keeping Up With The Kardashians" might know about the custody battle involving Rob Kardashian and Blac Chyna, but others may not be familiar with the family law decisions the former couple faces. When the pair got together in the beginning of 2016, they quickly fell in love and became engaged. They had a baby girl during their short romance and were even given a reality show spinoff.

Why child support calculators may not be accurate

When a Florida couple is heading towards divorce, determining how much the non-custodial parent may be required to pay in child support may be a priority. Before the couple heads to court, they could use a child support calculator to estimate the child support payments. However, it should be noted that the amount is only an estimation and a parent may be ordered to pay more or less by the court.

Changing child support orders

Florida parents who are bound by an existing child support order may find that a change in their circumstances may require that the order be modified. To receive more child support, or to be able to pay less child support, parents can either come to an agreement on their own or have a judge to decide.

Agreements for child support

Florida divorcing parents who have young children and who have concerns about paying or receiving child support should be aware that there are a few ways child support can be decided. Parents can opt to negotiate between themselves, use alternative dispute resolution methods or go through litigation. If the issue is resolved out of court, any agreement that is made will require the approval of the court to make sure that it is fair and is in compliance with state child support guidelines.
