How to improve your chances at child custody

If you are a parent in Florida who is going through a divorce, one big concern you may have is what type of custody decision is the court going to decide? If you want sole custody, there are certain things you can do that may help your chances.

According to FindLaw, it is ideal if you and your soon-to-be-ex spouse can come to an agreement together about child custody. However, this can be a challenge for many couples and, if this is the case, the court ends up making the decision. The judge considers what living situation is in the best interest of the child, and there are numerous factors he or she looks at including who is the better parent at tending towards the child's every day needs, and the preferences of an older child.

In many cases, judges tend to lean towards awarding joint custody, but Very Well Family discusses some things you can do if you feel you are the better parent and are seeking sole custody. Two things you should focus on are the physical and psychological welfares of the child. Discuss how you encourage a healthy lifestyle in terms of study habits, eating, sleeping, daily routine and after-school activities.

You should also let the judge know you are open and willing for the child to keep a relationship going with your ex, as having a connection with both parents is important for a child's mental and emotional health. Throughout your interactions in court and the custody proceedings, make sure you avoid attacking your spouse, as this can negatively affect your case.
