How fathers may increase their chances of getting custody

In some cases, fathers in Florida who are getting a divorce might want to seek full custody of their children. However, they might be worried that they are at a disadvantage. There is a popular image of some fathers as being deadbeat or absent dads. Furthermore, courts have traditionally assumed the mother would be a better full-time parent for children. Fathers may increase their likelihood of gaining custody if they can demonstrate a strong relationship with the child.

They should do this by keeping a paper trail that indicates all the time they spend with their children. This should include all costs related to the children as well. Fathers who are seeking sole custody should also be prepared for questioning from a judge about their relationship with their children. Judges want to ensure that children are in the best possible situation, and the parental relationships will be an important part of determining what this situation is.

There are a few things a father should avoid as well. He should not engage in confrontations with his wife or badmouth her. He should not take the children away without notice or move in with a new partner while the divorce is in progress. Furthermore, both parents should ultimately recognize that the focus should be on the children and what is best for them.

With this in mind, some parents may want to consider whether a more cooperative approach might be better in their situation than going to court to fight over custody. If a child is unsafe with one parent or if one parent simply refuses to negotiate, court might be the only option, but parents might otherwise find they are able to reach a solution instead of having a judge decide. A parent may want to consult a Venice, Florida child custody law firm for legal assistance in this regard.
