What child support can and cannot be used for

When a Florida noncustodial parent is order to pay child support, those funds can be used by the custodial parent to assist with the costs of raising the children. Because custodial parents are often less likely to be able to work as much if they are the primary caregiver for the children, the child support paid by the noncustodial parent is often essential when it comes to paying for all of the costs associated with maintaining the children's needs.

There are certain things that child support can be used for. For example, a custodial parent can use child support to help cover expenses associated with housing and feeding the children. Funds may go towards medical expenses and other costs associated with keeping the children healthy. A parent may also use child support funds for school supplies, school fees and extra-curricular activities. Finally, child support funds can go towards toys and books for the children.

Child support funds should only benefit the child and never be used for other things. For example, the funds should not be used to purchase alcohol and other items that are not for the children. Any money that is left over at the end of the month should be applied to future necessities.

If a noncustodial parent believes that the custodial parent is misusing the child support money, the payments should not be withheld. Instead, a child support attorney may assist with documenting the wrongful use and bringing it to the court's attention. Conversely, a custodial parent cannot take away visitation rights when a noncustodial parent falls behind. There are enforcement measures that an attorney could petition the court to institute in such an event.
