Prisoners may have child support obligations reduced

Florida non-custodial parents who are incarcerated may ask for a modification in the child support they are required to pay. However, this is not the case in every state, and the Obama administration is moving to put regulations in place that change this. The administration is also proposing that states be required to set child support based on a prisoner's actual income.

Gov. Scott vetoes reform to family law

If you have been following our blog, you are familiar with the legislative push to reform aspects of Florida's family law. SB 668 was designed to change alimony and child-sharing laws. Revision of alimony payouts would end permanent alimony upon the payer's retirement and recalculate alimony payments according to the length of the marriage. The new law would mandate that family court judges determine child-sharing based on the assumption that both parents receive equal time for child supervision.

Who gets the house in a divorce may depend on different factors

As many Florida residents who have gone through a divorce know all too well, the property division phase of the proceedings can often be difficult. In many cases, the home is the most valuable asset owned by the estranged couple. While in some cases they might be able to come to an accord on their own as to how to deal with the home, in other cases a judge will make the decision for them.
