Handling parenting disagreements when divorced

When parents share physical custody of children, the parent who they are with is usually the one who makes certain decisions about their well-being. Florida estranged couples might have a hard time if there is inconsistency between what one parent allows and the other does not. Even though they are divorced, they typically must still interact and work together for their kids.

Those with joint custody should try to enforce similar rules and routines in both houses as this helps a child transition between each home with less strain. This means rules about bedtime, food and time on the computer or TV may be more or less the same in each house. However, this could be challenging when parents disagree about what rules are needed. Parenting disagreements should be approached rationally and calmly so that a decision can be reached.

Co-parents can discuss concerns and their reasoning for certain rules in order to hopefully find a solution. If no compromise is available, one could change his or her stance to provide consistency. However, kids might be able to handle different rules for small issues. One parent might allow limited time playing video games while the other has less restrictions.

While having different expectations in each household could be hard for children, this is likely the best option if parents in Florida cannot agree. The only other recourse is seeking court intervention, which is likely not the right move for small matters. Judges generally want parents to set aside their differences and work together for the sake of their children. If both parents are capable of raising a child, judges typically favor the parent who can compromise and who encourages children to have a relationship with the other parent.
